A Safer Way to Eat Bananas?

Apparently, the best way to eat bananas is to drink them. Not sure what country this funny “True Fruits” ad is from. But it works.

We’ve had noisy neighbors … and they are indeed a nuisance. Who knew they were also hysterically funny. This is what your upstairs neighbors are really up to.

The Mannequin American from Twilight Zone

In 1962, Cliff Robertson stared as a ventriloquist in an episode of the Twilight Zone titled “The Dummy.”  A stereotype plot, the ventriloquist thinks his dummy is alive. But the show had a good twist at the end. You can see the entire episode here.

This is the puppet Cliff Robertson turns into at the end of the episode.

In 1964, the same puppet was used in another Twilight Zone episode, “Caesar and Me,” staring Jackie Cooper. In this show, the figure is definitely alive. And let’s just say he doesn’t put Mannequin Americans in a very good light.

Several years ago, Bob Isaacson posted this photo of Tom Basso, who, when the photo was taken, owned Caesar.

I think Tom eventually sold Caesar to David Copperfield … who owns a plethora of vent figures including multiple original Charlie McCarthys along with Mortimer Snerd, Effie Clinker, Jerry Mahoney, Knucklehead Smiff and others.

The “frowning Charlie” in the photo above was made for one of Bergen’s movies. The puppet has no movements and was only used for a couple of very quick camera shots. Dale and I actually got to handle that figure when it was owned by artist, Bill Nelson. The photo below of Winchell’s characters was taken at Copperfield’s private museum in Las Vegas, NV.

Copperfield's collection of original, well known ventriloquist figures is probably only rivaled by the collection at Vent Haven Museum.

Here’s a clip of Copperfield giving Otto a tour of Copperfield's dummy collection.
