Is Your Company Prepared to Respond to Negative Social Media?

A Puppet's Ramblings - from Chip Martin, Mannequin American Marketer

"If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough." - Mario Andretti

How Would Your Company Respond to Negative Social Media?

When it comes to social media, he who hesitates is lost. Speed is important, but so is consistency and calm. And those are attributes you can only get from having a well-considered social media crisis response plan.

Maybe it's the word "plan" that frightens people. This doesn't have to be a major undertaking: Having a social media crisis plan just means everyone knows their role. If you don't have a plan yet, try asking yourself:

  • Who is supposed to be monitoring social channels for signs of trouble? How are they doing this?
  • If something went wrong, who would have the authority to respond?
  • If that person is unavailable, how is that authority delegated?
  • What kinds of negative reactions does the company need to respond to and which ones is it better off leaving alone?
  • What's the official company line for common complaints about the brand?

Knowing the answers to those questions isn't the same as having a social media plan. But it's a start. You can hammer out the answers to those questions out in an afternoon meeting and use them as provisional guidelines while you work on a more formal plan. And that way you won't be caught flat-footed, even if trouble comes looking for you.

Pizza Hut Engagement Party Package

How's this for romantic (and a smart marketing ploy to get Pizza Hut some publicity)? If you're willing to shell out $10,010 to Pizza Hut you and your sweetheart will receive the following:

  • Limo service.
  • A ruby engagement ring.
  • A bouquet of flowers.
  • A personal fireworks display.
  • A professional photographer.
  • A professional videographer.
  • And last but not least, a Pizza Hut$10 Dinner Box, which contains "a medium one-topping rectangular pan pizza, five breadsticks with marinara sauce and10 cinnamon stickswith a sweet icing cup in one box."

Sure, it's a ruby ring and not diamond, and yes, your special someone will bemoan the fact that you proposed to him/her at Pizza Hut of all damn places until the day one of you dies, but still. Also, they hint that "If she says yes, a Pizza Hut-themed wedding at Pizza Hut headquarters could be in order." Pizza party wedding everybody! More info here.

The Milk Truck

The Milk Truck is a "mobile breast feeding unit" that ... well, click here and then click on the video.

The idea is if a woman is in a public place, like a restaurant, and is being hassled about breast feeding, she can call The Milk Truck which posts the name of the business on social media for all to see, and sends the eye-catching truck to the establishment. The truck parks in front of the business so the woman can breast feed her baby in comfort while the business can rethink its decision to make things difficult for the mom.

Great Outdoor Marketing Display

From CopyRanter: Many of you ad veterans have already seen this clever marketing gimmick for Rimmel quick-drying nail polish; but for those of you who don't work in the marketing industry I'd thought I'd share it.

Back in 2009, JWT London placed these marketing sculptures in front of Rimmel retailers in the UK. When shoppers went into the stores, they were greeted by another smaller version of the installation near the Rimmel display case.

There have been many cool-looking oversized outdoor ads (Two of my favorites: Mini-Cooper and Hot Wheels). But this one does a good job of dramatizing the product's benefit.

For When You Really Mess Up Big Time

So you messed up. Not too surprising, I mean... you can be really insensitive sometimes. But are you ready to make things right? This Balloon Package should do the trick! Everyone knows that "Sorry" really means "Please stop being mad." The package contains 12 red, yellow, & blue balloons and costs $11. The roses you'll have to buy to make up for the balloons are gonna cost extra. $11
